River Report -- Aug 2 After storms and hard rain wiped out Friday's guide trip, Dave L and I did a scouting/fun trip on the cloudy river. The bass hit in spurts, well enough to provide 35 or so boated fish by the end of the 6-hour session. Mostly keeper-sized bass, including three just shy of 3 pounds. The walleyes have been hitting well in the stained water as well. Two today in the 21 to 23 inch range on spinnerbaits and rattle baits.

River Report -- July 29 The bite a little slower than yesterday. Bass not as aggressive. Demanded close-to-the-bank casts. Still, a nice bunch of bass -- including a few 16 to 17.5 inchers -- as well as a couple walleyes. Allegheny in nice shape. Clarion pumping in lots of muddy water. Great guests today from the Las Vegas area.

River Report -- July 28 & 29 -- High pressure and blue skies greeted my guests and me on the 28th. A sporadic bite (about 15 bass0 throughout the day. But 11 year-old Shane highlighted the trip with several nice smallies, plus two walleyes. Shane caught most of his fish on a spinnerbait. It rained most of the 29, but the bass were on the chew much of the day. Guests Cory and Curtis and the guide boated about 45 smallies, including several good ones between 2.5 and 3 pounds. The bass responded well to several presentations.

River Report -- July 26 Murky waters greeted me when I introduced a young angler from Washington state to the middle Allegheny. A really good day with three smallies over 3 pounds, as well as a bunch over 2 pounds. Over 30 boated over the course of the day. Garret shows two of the bigger ones prior to release.

River Report -- July 25 River up another half foot or so and still heavily stained. Still, a really nice guide trip with a father & son from Illinois. Boated a bunch of smallies. Most of 'em over 12 inches, with several in the 16 to 17 inch range.

River Report -- July 24 River rose another foot overnight. Level should stabilize if things stay fairly dry. Good half-day guide trip, considering the size of the smallies caught. Biggest boated were 18 and 19 inches (displayed by guests before release). Another big one lost at the net...looked to be another 19 inch class fish. Also a few other fish, mostly good-sized ones. All on spinnerbaits.

River Report -- July 23 Overnight rains muddied up the river. Still, a good guide trip with over 30 smallies landed, including a good bunch in the 15 to 18 inch range. Bubblegum Sinkin' Salty Shad early, then Magic Stiks and spinnerbaits.

River Report -- July 18 A pretty decent bite following the passing of a cold front. A mix of sizes, including three quality smallies over 16 (biggest 17 inches); also lost two in the 18 to 19 inch range. Water level dropped a couple inches since yesterday. Blue skies followed by cloudy skies. Live Magic Shad swimbaits early, then Case Sinking Salty Shad later in the morning.

River Report -- July 17 Fellow river smallie nut Jason V. joined me today for a scouting trip. Ended up with a pretty nice bunch of brown bass, including a few in the 16 to 18 inch range. One bonus walleye. Case Sinking Salty Shad, LFT Live Magic Shad, Galida's Grubs, swimming jigs and tubes all produced smallies.

River Report -- July 16 Another decent day on the river. Smallie bite following a pattern of the past couple of weeks: Good action early in the morning, then working for them a bit the rest of the day. Ended up with 30 some smallies up to 17 inches, and one walleye. Case Sinkin' Salty Shad, LF Live Magic Shad and Rapala's X-Rap were the hot baits. River conditions good, with a nice flow and a hint of color.

River Report -- July 11 Guide trip shortened by t-storms. The bass weren't as aggressive as I thought they would be, considering the front side of a cold front. But still a decent day, with some really nice summertime fish. Biggest was 19 inches, and a couple 17 inchers. The rest a mix from 14 inches down. Case Sinking Salty Shad and LFT Live Magic Shad accounted for the best fish.

River Report -- July 7 The southern Venango County portion of the river was still off-color from the rains just prior to the July 4 weekend. The level up a bit, but still well within good limits. A fast morning bite preceded a slow but steady bite in the late morning and afternoon. High pressure and blue skies have been slowing the action during the day, a pattern that's affected several trips this year. Numbers down slightly for this trip, but a half-dozen smallies in the 16 to 17.75 inch range, coupled with the balance of the catch, made for a nice "quality over quantity" day.

River Report -- July 1 Nice conditions on the river today. Slight stain to the water; cloudy most of the day. Guests boated about 30 smallies today, and lost about the same amount. Mostly on soft swimbaits (most of the lost fish via short strikes on the soft swimbait); Case Sinking Salty Shad and Case Magic Stiks. Biggest smallie 17 plus inches. Most of the rest in the 11 to 14 inch range. River's finally warmed up into the low 70s.

River Report -- June 27 Allegheny in nice shape, fishing wise, this day. A fairly decent morning bite put about 14 smallies up to 17 inches in the boat. Most on Case Magic Stiks, but some on Lake Fork soft swimbaits and Booyah Single Spin spinnerbaits. Afternoon bite slow. Bass got in a finicky mood, just following and biting short. A couple good fish lost near the boat. Even with the stained water, those cloudless days have been bite-killers in the middle of the day of late.

River Report -- June 24 Rains this past Saturday raised the river during the early part of this week. Level was back down to a nice level, but the water was still heavily stained. Perfect conditions for a spinnerbait bite, so spinnerbaits it was! We boated 15 smallies during a half-day a.m. trip. Very nice size today. A 19 incher, two just shy of 18, plus a couple 16s. And except for a couple dinks, the balance were healthy fighters in the 12 to 14 inch range. Bonus fish was a small muskie abou 26 inches.

River Report -- June 20 Got lucky on the weather Friday and squeezed in a full day trip without any T-storms. A good bite in the morning, then had to work for them in the afternoon when the skies cleared. About 20 smallies and two northerns. Most of the bass on Case Sinking Salty Shad and Lake Fork soft swimbaits. Biggest smallie 18.5 inches. Storms canceled Saturday's trip. Rain brought the river up a bit...should be nice by mid week. Good flow with some color. Water temps should be in the 70s by then, with more bass in current areas.

River Report -- June 15 Bright sunny skies and high pressure followed a fog-filled morning. A good bite occurred in the fog, then slowed a bit as the sun cleared things out. Still, a good day. 30 smallies boated by guests, including a solid 20-incher. Most of the fish on Case Magic Stiks.

Kahle Lake/Allegheny River Report -- Did a split day on the bass opener. Morning on Kahle and afternoon on the river. Kahle largemouths were a little tight lipped, on the clear-out end of a cold front. We boated several largemouth up to 16 inches on sinking worms, soft jerkbaits and soft swimbaits. Kahle's water is extremely clear right now. Lots of weeds. Mostly milfoil/coontail, but some of that slimy grass that's made a appearance the past few years. Last winter's drawdown created a nice inside weedline. The river smallmouth fishing was solid, providing over 20 smallies during the afternoon shift. Biggest brown bass was 17 inches. Mostly on sinking worms. Folks interested in mixing in a largemouth trip with a river trip should contact me regarding the possibilities of setting up a combo outing.

River Report -- June 8-11 Guide trips this week produced 30 to 40 smallies per outing. Mostly 12 to 15 inch males, but a few quality fish up to 18.5 inches. With the warming water the bite should continue to be good. I expect the solid numbers of fish to continue, with more larger (female) smallies in the mix.

River Report -- May 31 We were greeted with a river about 2.5 feet higher than last time, and a dirty one at that. Still, a welcome site after the gin clear conditions this past Monday, and the slow fishing such provided. During today's scouting trip we caught 20-some smallies. The fish were on shallow gravel flats. Most came on spinnerbaits.

River Report -- May 25 Tough outing today. The river has continued to drop and gotten clearer. The bass have vacated the shallow spawning areas. We managed a few fish by drifting Case Magic Stiks in shallow areas with moderate current. The action should pick up after the bass have recuperated from spawning activities. The rain forecast for later this week should help perk things up.

River Report -- May 23 Given the post spawn status of the river smallie population, spend this afternoon scouting some summer locations. Bass moving into some summer spots, including rocky runs in the five to seven foot range. These spots also hold walleyes throughout the fall. This one hit a Case Magic Stik, and measured 24 inches.

River Report -- May 22 Water lower, clearer and warmer that last weekend. Judging from observations in the shallows, looks like the spawn is winding down. A few fish in spawning locations, but others moving into summer locations next to moving water. The bite a little tentative, which is common during the post-spawn period.

River Report -- May 17 Despite post frontal conditions and a nasty north wind, a very productive day. Lots of fish, including two 19-plus inchers. All from shallow water on Case Magic Sticks and Case Sinking Salty Shad.

River Report -- May 16 Great day on the river. Windy, pre-frontal conditions. Smallies eating Magic Stiks. Highlight of the trip was when the guests, a father and son, doubled up on their personal best smallies.
