River Report -- A good day on the Allegheny, today. We boated 35 to 40 smallies, 10 walleyes and a northern pike. No giant smallmouth -- the biggest was 17 inches -- but a lot of fish in the 12 to 16 inch range. Eight of the walleyes were legal, topped off with a 26 incher. Hair jigs were the hot bait today, both Jimmy D's Riverbugs and rabbit fur jigs. Also caught fish on tubes, Gailda's Grubz and Rapala Husky Jerks. Water temp 49 degrees, perfect green color, and normal flow for this time of year.

River Report -- Oct 23 Today started off slowly. But things picked up as the day went on. We ended up with 35 smallies boated and several others lost. With cooling water temperatures and more flow, smallmouth bass are moving into their late fall patterns. A few on Winco River Darters today, but most came on jigs -- Galida Grubz and jig-worm. Also a few on Terminator spinnerbait, including the biggest of today, a 19 incher. A lot of mid-sized fish today, from 12 to 14 inches. Several in the 15 to 19 inch class too. River stained and 53 degrees.

River Report -- Oct 21 We did a half-day four-hour morning trip today, during which it rained the whole time. Action was good during the first hour or so of the morning, then slowed down. We boated around 10 smallies, the biggest being a 19 incher. The bass were back on Winco River Darters today. Water temp 54 degrees, rising slowly and taking on more color.

River Report -- October 20 A more challenging day today. River came up some overnight. Lots of floating weeds and leaves, along with plenty of wind. This, combined with rather tight-lipped fish knocked the numbers back. Still, we worked hard, and managed to boat 18 smallies, including a 20, 19 and 18 incher. Also a 30 inch northern and a 23 inch walleye. Caught them on a variety of lures today -- but not a lot on any one particular presentation. Winco's River Darters, hard jerkbaits (Rapala X-Rap and Husky Jerk), Zoom Speed Craw, and Galida Grubz. Water temp 54 degrees and stained.

River Report -- Oct 19 Another splendid fall day on the Allegheny. We boated around 45 smallmouth bass and lost several others. A few small ones, but most of them were medium-sized bass in the 12 to 15 inch range. And several big ones from 16 to 18 inches. All of them on Winco's Solid Body River Darter. Water up a bit, slightly stained, and 56 degrees.

River Report -- Oct 11 Another solid fall outing on the Allegheny. We boated 35 smallies and lost a few more. A 20 incher topped the day, along with three others in the 18 inch range. Also several nice sized, extra-fat smallies in the 14 to 16 inch slot, along with some smaller fish. All on Winco's River Darters. The bubblegum version -- which is slated to be a regular offering in the River Darter series next year -- was particularly productive today. Water 56 degrees and slightly stained.

River Report -- Oct 8 A decent day on the Allegheny, all things considered. The day started off well, with lots of biting smallmouth bass the first two hours. Then things slowed significantly; and our efforts were hampered by strong, gusty winds. We scratched out a few fish during the middle of the outing, and then found a area during the last hour of the day with a bunch of schooling/foraging bass. Clients caught 15 during this period, including three doubles, and ended up with 35 to 40 for the day. A bunch of 14 to 19 inchers. Water temp 57, water stained.

River Report -- Oct 6 Today's half-day AM trip started slow. Perhaps the rapid drop in water tempeature combined with an equally rise/drop in level had them off. Regardless, we still have a good outing, eventually boating around 15 smallmouth bass. About eight of them were quality-sized bass in the 15 to 19 inch range. All on Winco's River Darters. Water temp 56 degrees, slightly stained.

River Report -- Oct 1 A nice day on the river. Not real high numbers -- we boated around 25 fish -- but mostly quality-sized bass. The two biggest were 19 inchers. A bunch in the 14 to 17 inch range. All on Winco's Solid Body River Darter. Most of them on pearl with char. tipped tail; but quite a few, including one of the 19 inchers, on Winco's new bubblegum SBRD w/ char tail. Water temp 65 degrees and clear.

River Report -- September 24 A very good day. We boated 50 smallies and lost several others. A dozen or so tiny ones; the balance all nice fish, including eight that went from 15 to 18 inches. With the exception of a couple on X-Raps and Winco tubes, all on Winco Solid Body River Darter. Water fairly clear; 61-63 degrees.

River Report -- September 21 A decent day, considering the wild weather. We boated 25 smallies and lost/missed many others on a weather-shortened day that brought blustery winds and some heavy downpours. All of today's fish on Winco River Darters. Water temperature 65 degrees and fairly clear, though Sunday's rain will likely put some color in the river

River Report -- Sept 20 Not a great day, but a pretty good one. We boated 37 smallies and lost a few others. Some small ones in today's mix but we managed quite a few quality-sized bass up to 19 inches. Most of the bigger fish on Winco's River Darters, though the biggest came on an X-Rap. A few on Winco's tubes as well. Water fairly clear and 65 degrees.

River Report -- Sept 16 My good friend outdoor writer and guide Darl Black (visit "Fishing with Darl Black" on Facebook) joined me for a late afternoon outing and photo shoot. A productive evening. In the 3.5 hours we had to fish we boated a bunch of smallies in the 14 to 16 inch range, and managed a couple real nice photo fish of 19 and 20 inches. Winco River Darters, Flukes and tubes. Water temp down to 66 degrees, a bit higher than average for this time of year, and slightly stained.

Update: Boat's fixed and we're ready to hit the water again! Many thanks to Wiegel Brother's Marine in Franklin for quick repairs. Had the new bearing and drive shaft in jet pump installed within hours of receiving it from Outboard Jets in California.

River Update -- August 30 The bearing in my outboard's jet pump went bad during a recent trip, leaving me out of commission for a few days while the necessary parts come in from California. During that trip we boated around a dozen smallies, limited to the available water as we drifted back to the ramp for the equivalent of a half day outing. Today one of my regulars asked for a guide trip, using his boat. The action was relatively slow during a half day morning trip. We boated around 15 smallies and one walleye. The water is clear and down to normal summertime flows. Not surprising, the spinnerbaits bite is dead. Winco's River Darter and Rapala X-Raps. More numbers on the X-Rap, but bigger fish on the River Darter. Mostly smaller fish today, but a couple nice ones up to 18 inches. Water temp 73 degrees.

River Report -- Aug 20 We boated/near boated around a dozen smallmouth and one walleye during the three hours we were on the water. Forced off due to heavy rain and a minor mechanical issue. Most of the bass in the 14 to 17 inch range. Terminator spinnerbaits and X-Raps.

River Report -- August 11 A decent day today, though shortened an hour by horizontal sheets of rain. We boated 27 smallmouth and 1 walleye. Lost several bass. More small bass in the mix today. Still, we caught many nice sized bass, including the day's biggest, 19.5 inches. Most of the fish today on Winco's River Darter. Some on Terminator spinnerbaits and XRaps. Water clearer today, though will likely get muddy with rain today, and predicted again tonight and tomorrow. 73 degrees.

River Report -- August 9 Another big fish day on the Allegheny. We boated around 35 smallies, two nice walleyes, and a small northern pike. Also lost several nice bass. A bunch of big smallies in the 17 to 19 inch range. All but one on Terminator spinnerbaits. Water level still up and murky; 72 degrees by late afternoon.

River Report -- August 7 We had to work for bites today, but were rewarded with big fish. Boated around 15 to 20 smallmouth bass and lost a few others. But all were nice fish...nothing under a foot. Most were over 15 inches, including the biggest of the day, which went 20 inches. Terminator spinnerbaits and Winco River Darters. River level 2.5 feet above summer average and stained. 72 degrees.
